Prices – TBA

A birding, cultural, and in general, fantastic introductory trip to Iceland. There is no other place in the world more heavily laden with breeding ducks than Myvatn in the spring! Enjoy endless days and perpetual sunsets as the midnight sun exposes this most spectacular region to you. All flights, transportation while in Iceland, and meals are included unless otherwise noted. Meals do not include alcohol with the exception of the cocktail party in Myvatn. Tipping is at your discretion but I can assure you..you will want to tip. These folks are INCREDIBLE!

Days 1 and 2
Arrive at Keflavik International Airport from Boston (other gateways available) at 6:30 AM. After going through immigration and customs (be sure to hit the Duty Free before exiting…alcohol is horrifically expensive here!), you will collect your bags, exchange money, and be greeted by your exquisite Icelandic guide. Transfer to the Northern Light Inn. Breakfast will be available. After breakfast you will take a spectacular seven hour tour of the Reykjanes Peninsula including stops at some birding cliffs. Dine on delicious soup at a local cafe, enter a shark shack and taste the infamous fermented shark, be amazed at the geothermal field at Krusvik and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Arrive back at your hotel at 4:00PM. Perhaps you would like to take this opportunity to soak in the medicinal waters of the spectacular Blue Lagoon. The hotel or your guide can take you there or you may choose to take the one mile walk through lava fields to really get a good impression of the area (www.bluelagoon.com). Welcome dinner buffet at the hotel is at 8:00PM.

Day 3
After breakfast you will be transferred to the domestic airport in Reykjavik for your late morning flight on Air Iceland (www.airiceland.is) to Akureyri (45 minutes). The flight cuts through the spectacular central highlands where there is little to no life. Soft drinks served on the flight. Upon arrival in Akureyri, collect your bags and be greeted by a fine representative from Sel-Hotel Myvatn (www.myvatn.is). Transfer to the hotel with a stop at spectacular Godafoss (Falls of the Gods) along the way. Check in at Sel-Hótel Mývatn and dine at the hotel. Here you will meet Iceland’s greatest ornithologist and one of Krummi Travel’s favorite sons, Johann Oli Hilmarsson (www.johannoli.com). Johann will be your birding expert during your stay!

Day 4
After an early breakfast at the hotel you will be taken to all of the most popular bird-watching spots around Lake Mývatn. Sightseeing tour to the Krafla area in the afternoon. A lecture by the staff of the Mývatn Research Station in the evening.

Day 5
Visit to the turf house museum at Grenjaðastaður and the power plant at Laxá on the way to Húsavík. From Húsavík, sail out to the bay Skjálfandi to spot some seabirds (and of course, puffins and whales!). A visit to the Nature Bath at Mývatn on the way back to the hotel awaits you afterwards. (don’t forget to pack your bathing suit!) An optional midnight hike up the tephra crater, Hverfjall, caps off another exceptional day!

Day 6
Free morning to explore the bird life around the lake with Johann or perhaps climb the nearby pseudo-craters. After lunch you will be treated to a tour of some interesting places on the lake, such as Höfði and the lava formations at Dimmuborgir (home to Gyrfalcons). Before dinner enjoy a farewell cocktail party at a surprise location.

Day 7
Free morning to explore the bird life around the lake. Transfer to Akureyri with time for brief sightseeing in town. Flight to Reykjavík in the afternoon. Upon arrival in Reykjavik, meet your dazzling guide who will transfer you to your hotel in this charming capital. The rest of the day is free to explore, shop, or perhaps visit the National Museum or National Art Gallery or take a trip to the top of Hallgrimskirkja for a towering view over the city, or swim in one of the many local pools located around the city. Everything you could possibly need is within walking distance. Dinner together at a lovely local restaurant caps off the day.

Day 8
After breakfast, board the van for a full day tour of Iceland’s Golden Circle (Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss). You can walk around the world-famous Geysir area, a geothermal field where hot springs are in abundance, geysers explode and pools of mud bubble. One of many highlights of the tour is the Gullfoss waterfall, the queen of Iceland’s waterfalls. Finally, but no less spectacular is a visit to the Thingvellir National Park. This is the original site of the oldest existing parliament in the world. The Great Atlantic Rift is clearly visible, a rift that is slowly pulling Iceland apart along tectonic plates. . Return to the hotel around 5:00 P.M. At 6:00 P.M. meet at the lovely Icelandic restaurant, Prir Frakkar for a farewell dinner.

Day 9
The morning is free to do some last minute shopping or museum hopping before being collected at 2:00P.M. for the ride to Keflavik International Airport and your flight home to Boston via Icelandair. Arrive in Boston around 6:30 P.M.
