Evenings will be spent hoping the Hidden People will hit the switch to the Aurora Borealis! This is an extraordinary opportunity to hang out with the locals and really cozy up to the feeling of what it is like to be a native in this most glorious season in this most wonderful island nation.

Day 1: Welcome to Iceland!

Fly from Boston to Keflavik, Iceland on Icelandair. Upon arrival, collect your bags. You may wish to hit the duty free shop for libations, as alcohol in Iceland is very expensive. Our so much fun and hugely knowledgeable guide, Fridrik Runar Gudmundsson will babysit us while we are in Iceland. We’ll be whisked away to breakfast followed by an optional walk and 90 minute swim in the ethereal Blue Lagoon ($60). Once you are relaxed and refreshed jump on board the bus for a drive to Borgarnes and after a stop or two to some out of this world places (secrets), settle into our first destination, the cozy former fishing lodge, Hotel Ensku Husin where we will spend an evening like no other in the company of charming owners Hjorleifur and Anna. A group dinner featuring farm to table cuisine will cap off the day, followed by an optional trip outside to hunt for the Northern Lights.

Days 2, 3, 4: The Myvatn Experience

Get on the bus for a long drive north to Iceland’s second largest city, Akureyri, before ending at our destination for the next three evenings, Myvatn and the Sel – Hotel Myvatn. On the drive north we plan to visit a seal rescue center and some tremendously beautiful natural wonders. You’ll have an opportunity to explore beautiful Akureyri and perhaps do a little shopping or tuck into a lovely café for cake and coffee. On the way to Myvatn we’ll visit spectacular Godafoss (Falls of the Gods). Our stay in Myvatn will include touring geothermal areas, natural areas, optional snowmobiling, hiking, swimming at the Myvatn Nature Baths, cross country skiing,  and if we are well behaved the hotel promises to build a bowling alley on the lake for us!  There will be surprises as well! On Friday afternoon experienced riders may wish to rent a horse and ride across the lake with Icelanders to an island where the rest of us will drive. Eat delicious smoked lamb sandwiches washed down with copious amounts of hot chocolate in a wonderful tradition which heralds Saturday’s Myvatn Open, aka The Ice Tolt. Saturday morning is free to explore the area on your own or as a group. The Saturday horse show (optional) features many of Iceland’s greatest horses and riders. Small nails are hammered into the horseshoes and the animals fly across the lake exhibiting the gaits that define this unique breed. After the show there is a cake buffet which is not to be missed (Icelanders are ADDICTED to sugar!) and prizes of beer and food baskets are awarded. The afternoon is free to relax before the “Horseman’s Ball” which includes a sumptuous buffet, singing, and dancing. (fancy dress optional)

Day 5, 6: Off to the South!

We’ll depart Myvatn this morning on our journey back south.  You’ll arrive later in the afternoon at the beyond super fab Frost & Fire Hotel. The rest of the day will be spent on your own to explore the town of Hveragerdi, one of the most geothermal areas in Iceland. Perhaps you will like to sink into one of the hotel’s hot pots or paddle about in their swimming pool. Dinner tonight will be at this beautiful hotel. The following morning you will take a trip along the south shore to visit some spectacular natural wonders. Dinner this evening will be off site and very special.

Day 7: Reykjavik and home!

Pack your bags. After breakfast we’ll set off for a few hours of last minute power shopping and museum hopping in Iceland’s quaint capital, Reykjavik. Gerri will point you in the direction of whatever souvenirs or museums you desire. At 2:00PM board the van for Keflavik Airport and your flight back to Boston. Arrive in Boston at 6:35PM carrying your hot dogs, raw legs of lamb, cheeses, skyr and other Icelandic delicacies that are all legal because you just visited the tidiest place on earth!

Begin planning your next trip to Iceland.
